The New Deal-era photographs in Claiming Citizenship illustrate a number of ways that African Americans took opportunities opened up by the New Deal to claim their status as citizens, in some ways laying foundations for the Civil Rights Movement. The exhibition—curated by Rickie Solinger—also explores (implicitly and explicitly) the constituent elements of "citizenship.”
