This exhibition brings to life the faces and stories of our community through the eyes of those who serve it daily. Featuring an array of portraits—of people we know, self-portraits, and portraits of our patrons and colleagues—each piece has been crafted by our very own NYPL librarians. With both a deep familiarity and a varied style, these works capture the rich and diverse tapestry of individuals who move through our doors and the communities we serve.

The Importance of Portraiture:

Portraiture has long been a mirror to society, grounding our perception of identity, status, and human connection. From the detailed studies of Renaissance masters to today’s hyper-realistic, abstract, and digital interpretations, portraiture has always transcended pure representation, exploring the unseen elements of personality, culture, and human experience. Through portraiture, we see others—and ourselves—framed by time, emotion, and the gaze of the artist.

In today's art world, portraiture has experienced a resurgence, celebrating diversity and inclusion and reflecting back on personal and collective histories. Contemporary artists blend traditional techniques with modern media, challenging norms and expanding what a portrait can be. This creative evolution reminds us that portraiture is not a static art; it adapts and evolves, mirroring the fluidity of human identity and cultural context. At the core, portraits capture what is often intangible—what it means to be seen, recognized, and remembered.

Our Library’s Connection to Portraiture:

As librarians, we are keen observers and listeners, immersed daily in the lives of our community members. We witness countless interactions, conversations, and expressions, each of which builds our understanding of the people we serve. This closeness with the community makes us more than custodians of books; we are connectors and storytellers. The portraits on display reflect our familiarity with these individuals and a unique perspective that only we, as engaged participants in their lives, can offer.

Through this exhibition, we celebrate the faces and identities that shape our library and our neighborhood. Every portrait represents a relationship, a story, and an enduring connection. Join us in exploring these faces—a vivid reminder of the humanity that libraries hold at their heart.
