Frédéric Brenner (b. 1959)
Marranos celebrating Passover in the attic. Belmonte, Portugal.
Gelatin silver print.
1989.
In this photograph, a Jewish family in Portugal celebrates Passover in secret and symbolically hides in attic. It is their tribute to the the Marrano traditions of their predecessors. Marranos were Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forcefully converted to Christianity during the Middle Ages but continued to discretely practice Judaism.
