DoE/LCE Middle School Boot Camp Theater Students
The NYC Department of Education collaborated with Lincoln Center Education and the Education staff of constituent members to develop a "boot camp" for middle school students to prepare them for the auditions and/or portfolio reviews needed to get into a magnet performing and visual arts high school. This summer serves as a pilot for the program, which may be offered annually. The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts was pleased to support the program by offering discipline-specific orientations for the Dance, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theater and Visual Arts students, teachers and teaching artists this week.
The students were studying theater and musical theater. They were shown how to search for circulating material, such as scores, CDs and books. They also viewed the O'Neill Theater Center exhibit (Astor Gallery) and the BMI Young Composer material in a case exhibition.
Please note that the attending students were between 7th and 8th grades. Since they were 12, they have to be listed as children, but the level of information within their art form was specifically aimed at YAs.
