Boot Camp Vocal Music student visit

The Boot Camp is project of the NYC Department of Education and Lincoln Center Education, established to give 2 intensive weeks of audition/portfolio training to assist rising 8th graders preparing to apply for entrance into the specialized high schools.  Each August, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts collaborates with the project by giving orientations, special experiences and library cards to the participants.  Since the students are between 7th and 8th grades, I am listing them as Young Adults, but some of them may have been under 13..

The 35 Vocal Music  students  viewed the Music for Moderns exhibition, focussing on the manuscript scores commissioned by Anahid Ajemnian.   The teachers had prepared a Scavenger Hunt to facilitate the students' learning how to locate music for practicing and performing in the Circulating Music collections.  We taught them how to refine searches in the nypl.org catalog and advised them on expanding their repertories by identifying vocal ranges with key words.   The clues led them to Circulating scores, the Song Index, Circulating CDs , books on music, and  DVDs.   The final question brought us into the Magical Designs for Mozart's Magic Flute, where they viewed very early piano-vocal voolumes and Marcella Sembrich's own  score for the Queen of the Night's arias.
