About the Photographs and Prints Division

The Photographs and Prints Division contains both documentary and fine art photographs, which document the history and culture of people of African descent worldwide as well as the work of photographers of African descent. The collection of over 300,000 images ranges from mid-eighteenth-century graphics to contemporary documentary and art photography. All of the major photographic processes are represented.

Can researchers walk in to access the collection?
At this time, we are not offering walk-in access to our collections, but researchers can still access them by appointment.
How do I make an appointment?
To request an advance appointment, create a Special Collections Account, click on "My Appointments → Make an Appointment," and follow the prompts.
What else do researchers need to know about accessing the collection?

Newly Digitized! | Explore the Schomburg Center's Oldest Photos Online
Seventeen daguerreotype portraits were added to the digital collection. The pictures span the 1840s through the 1850s and are the oldest photos in the collection. Images feature Black people across the African Diaspora. Invented in 1839, daguerreotypes were one of the oldest and first widely available photographic technologies of its day.
