The Schomburg Center Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division has two copies of the book; the copy in call number [Sc Rare F 88-1] is an author's annotated copy, post-Lawrence Reddick addition to the collection. It does not have an NYPL bookplate, no NYPL perforated stamp, ink stamp, or early processing marking of the original Schomburg collection. It includes various inscriptions or manuscript notations by or about R.R. Madden. It also contains a bookplate: "Presented to the Pantheon Club by the Author," and an article about L.E.L's death pasted on the preliminary pages. Imperfect: torn, some loose pages, almost completely separated from the cover, and page VII and VIII is lacking from this copy.
  2. The copy in Sc Rare 326.1-Z is part of the original collection purchased from Arthur A. Schomburg in 1926. It includes NYPL's bookplate of "Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection," the NYPL perforated stamp, the circle ink stamp, early processing markings of the original Schomburg Collection, and a library bounding date stamped: "Feb. 9, 1928." Bound in light blue cloth over boards, library binding, and gilt spine title.
