- Austin Hansen discusses his life and career as a photographer; family and childhood in St. Thomas; introduction to photography; first camera and professional photographs; arrival in U.S. in 1928; interest in Statue of Liberty; attempt to sell photos to Daily News; various jobs held; musical gigs; start as a professional photographer; work for churches; brother Aubrey; incidents photographed in Harlem; drafted into Navy during WWII; duties in Navy; race relations; illness and disability discharge; Office of War Information; employed by Amsterdam News; studio and work done there; views of photographs; painting b&w photos, print-on color film; more photos; (4) darkroom where negatives developed; working methods; kitchen and dryer for glossy prints; more photographs; darkroom for developing prints; tintype and restored copy.
