- Disc 1 (approximately 47 minutes). John Gruen speaks with Gary Chryst about his career at the Joffrey Ballet beginning with his unconventional parents and his upbringing in California, New Jersey, and New York; his discovery of dance while at the High School of the Performing Arts in New York; more on his parents; his work with Norman Walker and the circumstances of his becoming a dancer at the Joffrey Ballet; his brief detour into musical comedy and his memories of Molly Picon; his father's sudden death; some of Chryst's roles at the Joffrey Ballet; Robert Joffrey as a director; briefly, Gerald Arpino; his thoughts on his own dancing; [Leonide] Massine as a director, in particular with respect to Chryst in the role of the Chinese Conjurer in Massine's Parade; Chryst's thoughts when he is performing; dance as a means of expressing himself; the collegial nature of the company; more on his mother; his activities outside of dance; partnering; the severity of critics as a stifling factor for new choreographers [ends abruptly].
