Daniel Mack introduces his guest, Robert Helpmann; Robert Helpmann speaks about his background in both dance and theater including his performances at the Old Vic Theatre; his belief in the importance of dramatic training for dancers; the role of Hamlet; creating emotional contact with the audience when acting in a drama as compared with dancing in a ballet; his belief that the purpose of the theater is entertainment. Part 2. Panchita Pierce introduces her guest Robert Helpmann, and the film Don Quixote adapted by Helpmann and Rudolf Nureyev from the ballet; Helpmann speaks with Pierce about the making of the film, at an airplane hangar in Australia; Lucette Aldous; the purpose of ballet as entertainment.

  1. Two interviews with Robert Helpmann. Part 1: Interview by Daniel Mack, broadcast in October 1973 by radio station WRVR, New York (approximately 15 minutes.). Part 2: Interview by Panchita Pierce broadcast on October 28, 1973 by television station WNBC, New York on its series Sunday (approximately 10 minutes.). This section includes excerpts from the soundtrack of the film of the ballet Don Quixote co-directed by Helpmann and Rudolf Nureyev.
  2. The sound quality is fair. The recording is marred by "tape hiss," which is more pronounced in part 2, but the speakers' voices are clear and easily intelligible.
