- SUMMARY: Balinese dancer I Made Bandem discusses his family tradition of dancing; his teachers which included his father, Mario, and Pak Raka Saba; the baris dance, arja style, kebyar, legong, topeng, gambuh, and barong; the Pandji characterization in the gambuh dance drama (topic of his thesis at UCLA); teaching at ASTI Dance University in Denpasar, Bali; applying Western dance concepts to new Balinese dances; Western teaching methodology (synthetic analysis) vs. the traditional Balinese method (imitation); changes in cultural traditions of Bali; effects of tourism; governmental support; influence of western culture on Balinese music.
