Summary
  1. Two programs from the documentary series Rito y geografía del baile flamenco, which presents an extended analysis of different aspects of flamenco dancing, in conjunction with other Spanish dance forms. Performances by amateur and professional dancers are recorded on location, onstage, and in dramatized re-creations of scenes from the past. Additional information is provided through interviews with scholars, dancers, musicians, and others associated with the art of flamenco song and dance.

  1. CONTENTS: Baile flamenco en la actualidad (approx. 30 min.). Exploration of the current state of flamenco, including the rise of interest in flamenco outside Spain. Performance excerpts include: Soleá, danced by El Güito; Bulerías, danced by Rafael "El Negro"; Bulerías, danced by Manuela Carrasco. Paco Fernández, who is seen teaching flamenco dancing in Japan, talks about his experiences there. Appearing in interviews are Alberto Larios, an agent; Arturo Pavon, Felipe Garcia, Manuel Verdasco, José Luis Leal, and Juan Rosello Esteve. -- Aportaciones actuales (approx. 30 min.). Survey of some innovative uses of flamenco, especially in theatrical productions. Performance excerpts include: Socalera, danced by Raul (seen in rehearsal and onstage); Quejio, performed by La Cuadra [company]; Bodas de sangre [Blood wedding, after the play by Federico García Lorca], danced by Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos, and company; Bulerías por soleá, danced by El Güito and Mario Maya; and Bulerías, danced by Tio José Vargas. Flamencologist J. M. Caballero Bonald is interviewed.
