Summary

1. Two programs from the documentary series Rito y geografía del baile flamenco, which presents an extended analysis of different aspects of flamenco dancing, in conjunction with other Spanish dance forms. Performances by amateur and professional dancers are recorded on location, onstage, and in dramatized re-creations of scenes from the past. Additional information is provided through interviews with scholars, dancers, musicians, and others associated with the art of flamenco song and dance.

Dance teacher Angel Pericet notes the differences between the escuela bolera, which evolved in the 18th century, and flamenco; flamencologist D. Arcadio Larrea discusses the etymology of the word flamenco. Performance excerpts include: Vito, sung and danced by Isabel de Madrid; Panaderos de Sevilla, danced by Aurora Pons and Alberto Fuentes; Fandango, La mosca, and Cachucha, danced by gipsies of Sacromonte; Rondeñas, danced by Gloria Mandelik and Pablo Rodarte. -- Folklore y flamenco (approx. 29 min.). Examination of the evolution of flamenco and other Spanish folk dance forms such as the malagueña.
