Summary
  1. Two programs from the documentary series Rito y geografía del baile flamenco, which presents an extended analysis of different aspects of flamenco dancing, in conjunction with other Spanish dance forms. Performances by amateur and professional dancers are recorded on location, onstage, and in dramatized re-creations of scenes from the past. Additional information is provided through interviews with scholars, dancers, musicians, and others associated with the art of flamenco song and dance.

Exploration of the background of flamenco in the 18th- and 19th-century bailes del candil (dances by candlelight), informal performances given to friends and neighbors. Dance teacher Angel Pericet notes the differences between the escuela bolera, which evolved in the 18th century, and flamenco; flamencologist D. Arcadio Larrea discusses the etymology of the word flamenco. Performance excerpts include: Vito, sung and danced by Isabel de Madrid; Panaderos de Sevilla, danced by Aurora Pons and Alberto Fuentes; Fandango, La mosca, and Cachucha, danced by gipsies of Sacromonte; Rondeñas, danced by Gloria Mandelik and Pablo Rodarte. -- Folklore y flamenco (approx. 29 min.). Examination of the evolution of flamenco and other Spanish folk dance forms such as the malagueña. Performance excerpts include: Fandango de gulga, danced by Grupo Folklorico de Alosno; Verdiales, danced by Panda de Almogla [company]; Bulerías, danced by Manolito Gero; Bulerías, danced by José Vargas "El Mono"; Bulerías, danced by Loli "La del Piti"; Recitado [dance and recitation], performed by Carmen Casarrubio. Appearing in interviews are flamencologist Antonio Mata, cantaor [flamenco singer] Manuel Soto, and dancers Regla Ortega and Pilar López, who discuss flamenco costume.
