Summary

1. Choreographers Johanna Boyce, John Bernd, and Julie Fraad and breakdancer Ritchie Williams discuss how dance springs from and incorporates elements from their environment. Bernd, who performs an excerpt from his Story yet to be understood, tells how he attempts to present daily life in an accessible way. Boyce discusses her use of non-dancers and non-dance movements. Williams, who gives a demonstration of breakdancing, joins Fraad in describing the street origins of breakdancing and how it grew from a form of competition into a performing art presented by groups such as Rock Steady Crew. Fraad mentions her attempts to combine breaking with the electric boogie, another dance form that originated on the streets. In conclusion, an excerpt from Boyce's Incidents in coming of age is screened.
