Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (27 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Different aspects of ethnic dancing are explored by Matteo, an authority on dances of many cultures and the artistic director of Matteo Ethnoamerican Dance Theatre, and Alan Lynes, artistic director of the Sundance company, who uses ethnic dance as a source of inspiration for his choreography. Some topics discussed are approaches to ritual dance, research into ethnic dances and their adaptation for performance, the creative use of ethnic material, and how the media shape our perceptions of ethnic dancing. Lynes performs his solo Osiris, inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, and Matteo demonstrates the typical stances of Spanish, Scottish, Thai, Indian, Native American, African, and Japanese dance, explaining the links they reveal between movement and culture. In Esoterica balletica, Robert Cohan, artistic director of London Contemporary Dance Theatre, recounts how the company's school was founded and how it trains dancers for the company.
