- Summary
- Bessie Schoenberg and Louise Roberts, who have devoted their lives to encouraging the work of emerging dancers and choreographers, talk about some past and present activities. Schoenberg reminisces about studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse, contrasting this with the high cost of studying dance today. She and Roberts discuss the importance of risk-taking, conviction, and self-evaluation in a dancer's career. Roberts recalls her Sunday workshop programs, which allowed choreographers to show their works to live audiences, and discusses how dancers should treat reviews. Schoenberg describes her approach to teaching dance composition, and briefly discusses the Bessie Awards. Dance excerpts depict works by two choreographers aided by Roberts: Anarchy, wild women and Dinah by Jawole Zollar, performed by Urban Bush Women; and Paul Andrew Thompson's Frantic romanticism. In addition, Valda Setterfield is seen introducing Schoenberg at the first annual presentation of the Bessies in 1984. Esoterica balletica, narrated by Phil Lee, presents a brief history of different methods of dance notation, illustrated by excerpts of the New York Baroque Dance Company and Concert Royal in performance at Hunter College, dancing Baroque works reconstructed by Catherine Turocy.
