Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Guests are Martha Hill, founder/director of the Bennington School of Dance, and dancer/choreographer Daniel Lewis. Hill reminsces about the early years of Bennington, and the participation of Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, and Hanya Holm, as well as Lincoln Kirstein's Ballet Caravan. She and Lewis talk about the dancer's education and ways in which festivals and gatherings like Bennington can enrich it. As examples, Lewis recalls working with José Limón on the creation of The unsung, and Hill describes John Martin's course in dance criticism. The program is profusely illustrated with archival films of dancers in outdoor and indoor classes and performances at Bennington. May O'Donnell and Limón are seen in their piece Three inventories on Casey Jones. Limón, Betty Jones, and Ruth Currier perform in Humphrey's Invention (b&w). The footage also provides glimpses of Valerie Bettis, Louis Horst, Weidman, and others. In Esoterica balletica, Lynn Garafola discusses the stage designs of André Derain for Léonide Massine's La boutique fantasque, Fernand Léger for Börlin's La création du monde, and Gerald Murphy for Börlin's Within the quota.
