Summary
  1. Documentary on the First American Jazz Dance World Congress, sponsored by Gus Giordano and the Theatre Department and Dance Program of Northwestern University, chaired by Susan Lee. Footage of classes, rehearsals, and performances are interspersed with commentaries by organizers and participants, among them Gus Giordano, Nan Giordano, Patsy Swayze, and Judi Sheppard Missett; a brief history of jazz dancing; interviews with choreographers Sam Watson, Kumiko Sakamoto, and Rick Odums; reflections on dancers' health problems by Lynne Chervony Belsky, Alice Brandfonbrener, Susan Lee, and Judith Scott; and profiles of master teachers Matt Mattox, Luigi, Gus Giordano, Frank Hatchett, and Joe Tremaine. Dancers Ann Newlin and Derrick Evans discuss the qualities of a good jazz dancer. Represented through archival footage are Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Jack Cole, Katherine Dunham, Bob Fosse, and Alvin Ailey. Three complete dance works conclude the program: By Django (choreography, Gordon Pierce Schmidt ; performed by Ballet Chicago) -- Michelangelo: images in stone (choreography, Gus Giordano ; performed by Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago) -- Judy's man that got away (choreography, Sherry Zunker-Dow ; performed by Zunker-Dow and Seth Hoff.
