- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Marlies Yearby and Laurie Carlos discuss how they developed and maintain a sense of their racial identity in their art. They recall black stereotypes on film and television in their youth, and the slow evolution towards a multicultural outlook. They contrast the integration of voice, drumming, and movement in African art with the separation of similar elements in Eurocentric art. Carlos is seen performing with the Urban Bush Women in Julie Dash's film of Praise house, and in Monkey dances, choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Yearby and others perform excerpts from her work Pushing through a tight place.
