First part of a Malaysian folk theater and dance ritual or performance of several hours' duration, probably recorded during Manuel Alum's visit to Malaysia in 1990. The performance continues on *MGZIC 9-4832 and 9-4833, also titled Dewa Pecil, Bahgian. Some sections of this performance may be recognized in theatricalized form in Alum's choreographic work Made in Malaysia/a shamanic journey, first presented at the Asia Society, New York, in June 1991. Among these are the Main puteri, an exorcism ritual performed by a male or female shaman and a rebab player who acts as an interrogator, and the Mak yong, a dance-drama in which women perform all the roles except those of clowns. The performance combines dancing, gamelan music, singing, and dialogue.
