  1. Cassette 1 (ca. 37 min.). Stanley Williams looks back upon his training in Bournonville ballet technique and the life of a student at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen. He discusses his experiences in the U.S., including George Balanchine's influence upon his teaching, his staging of Bournonville choreography for the students of the School of American Ballet, and the genesis of his ballet Bournonville divertissements, telecast under the title Bournonville dances. Other topics include the special qualities of August Bournonville's choreography, Danish dancers in the New York City Ballet (especially Peter Martins), and a comparison of Danish and American dancers.

Williams continues his discussion of Bournonville's choreography, including its timing, use of jumps and beats, and port de bras; the roles he danced in Bournonville ballets (among them James in La sylphide); the challenges of staging Bournonville today; the "discovery" of Bournonville by the west in the 1950s; the preservation of Bournonville's works in Denmark; and male-female characterizations and relationships in Bournonville ballets.
