- Summary
- Documentary on the career of ballerina Sylvie Guillem, much of it told in her own words. Filmed on location in France, England, Switzerland, and Sweden, the program follows Guillem from her student days at the Paris Opéra Ballet school through her membership in the Paris Opéra Ballet and her decision to join Britain's Royal Ballet, while concurrently making guest appearances with other companies. Her special qualities and achievements as a dancer are discussed by Ghislaine Thesmar of the Paris Opéra Ballet, Anthony Russell-Roberts and Anthony Dowell of the Royal Ballet, and British dance critics John Percival and Clement Crisp. Additional insights are contributed by choreographers with whom she has worked: Maurice Béjart, who created Episodes and Sissi for her; and Mats Ek. Guillem is seen rehearsing with William Forsythe, Béjart, and Mats Ek; dancing in a studio in the south of France; in a student performance; in dance footage shot especially for the South Bank Show; and in the videodance Wet woman, commissioned from Ek by the South Bank Show. This documentary was entered in the Grand Prix International Vidéo Danse.
