Summary
Eight interviews with members of Chaksam-pa, a San Francisco-based performing group specializing in Tibetan dance and opera. All the interviewees are queried about their experiences as students and instructors at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in Dharamsala, India, and their perceptions of their performance of the Tibetan folk opera Sukyi Nima, presented the day before as the climax of Tibet Week in Flagstaff. Cassette 1. Interview one: Sonam Tsering and Sonam Pelmo (ca. 13 min.) / topics include the function of drumming in Tibetan opera.
Interview two: Tsering Topgyal (ca. 17 min.) / topics include the role of Yama, which he played in Sukyi Nima.
Interview three: Tashi Dhondup, artistic director of Chaksam-pa (ca. 23 min.) / topics include the qualities required of a performer in Tibetan opera (e.g., voice, movement, style, physique), and his experiences in theater forms other than Tibetan: Japanese Nō, Indian, Balinese shadow plays.
Interview four: Tashi Yangzom (ca. 5 min.).
Cassette 2. Interview five: Tenzin Gonpo (ca. 10 min.) / topics include his work as a freelance performer living in France.
Interview six: Nyima Gyalpo and Tsering Dolma (ca. 10 min.) / topics include their current life in Bylakuppee, South India, where they teach music and dance at the Tibetan Children's Village School.
Interview seven: Karma Gyaltsen (ca. 6 min.) / topics include his work as a freelance performer of Tibetan music and dance.
Interview eight: Sonam Tashi, tour manager (ca. 19 min.) / topics include the founding of Chaksam-pa, and the process of mounting the production of Sukyi Nima.
