- Summary
- Documentary on the lives of a group of female cabaret performers working in a nightclub in Bombay. Interviews with the women point out the contrast between the traditional sheltered, homebound role of Indian women and a developing thirst for autonomy and self-sufficiency. Discussions with a group of male customers and a husband and wife expose the double standards and hypocrisy of society. The cabaret performers are seen onstage, backstage, and in their homes, and the film follows one woman on a visit to her home village, where her family's opposition to her profession is clearly demonstrated.
