Biography

1. Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller, a sculptor, was born in Philadelphia in 1877. She was one of the first renowned Africa-American women sculptors in the United States and was known for dealing with the African-American experience in her work and depicting African-American subjects at a time when such themes were considered too controversial.
2. She received her education at the Pennsylvania Museum School for the Industrial Arts (1894-1897); moved to Paris, from 1899-1902, where she studied drawing and sculpture at the Academie Colarossi and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, as well as under painter Henry O. Tanner and sculptor Auguste Rodin. She returned to the United States in 1903 and opened a studio in Philadelphia. In 1907 she was commissioned by the Jamestown Trecentennial Exposition to create a tableaux for the Negro Pavillion, representing black progress since the arrival of the first slave ship in 1619. She received a gold medal from the Trecentennial Exposition for the 150 figure diorama she produced.
3. In 1909, she married Dr. Solomon C. Fuller, a Liberian-born neurologist, who was, at Boston University's School of Medicine, one of the first African-American physicians to serve on the faculty of a predominantly white medical school. They had three sons. In 1910, the bulk of Meta's early work was destroyed in a warehouse fire in Philadelphia. After a brief lapse in her work, she resumed her career in 1913, and received commissions from W.E.B. DuBois, the City of New York, the National Council of Negro Women in Washington, D.C., the Framingham (Mass.) Union Hospital and Framingham Center Library during the 1910s and 1920s. As she became more involved with African-American political and social life, she continued to focus on the theme of the African-American experience in her work during the 1930s and 1940s. During the 1940s Solomon became ill, and his death in 1953, along with Meta's contraction of tuberculosis, sidelined her career until 1957. She continued working until her death in 1968.
