Summary
  1. This program looks at Elgar's life and appraises his work, showing his musical development within the context of his time, and assessing above all "The dream of Gerontius". Includes live footage of Elgar conducting and commentary by conductor Simon Rattle and several of Elgar's biographers (Michael De-La-Noy, Michael Kennedy, Diana McVeagh, Jerrold Northrup Moore, and Percy Young), as well as excerpts from performances of many of his works, principally by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with various soloists, conducted by Rattle.
