Summary

1. Biographical documentary on the life and achievements of the Cuban-born singer, jazz musician, and composer Machito (real name Frank Grillo, 1908-1984). The program traces his musical roots in Cuba, then examines his contributions to the development of Latin music in the U.S., particularly the combination of Afro-Cuban music and jazz. Dance promoter Federico Pagani, bandleader Tito Puente, and musicians Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Barreto, and Dexter Gordon are among the contemporaries who comment on his work.
