Contents
  1. Don Quixote (ca. 27 min.) / interviewees, Veronica Tennant, Cynthia Gregory, Kevin McKenzie, William Littler, Charles Kirby, Bruce Marks, Fernando Bujones, Anthony Dowell, Paloma Herrera, Karen Kain, Monique Loudières, Charles Jude, Claude Bessy, Antoinette Sibley ; dancer, Kimberly Glasco ; principal dancers in performance footage, Tatyana Terekhova (Kitri), Farouk Ruzimatov (Basilio). Topics discussed include the difficulties of adapting Cervantes's novel to the dance medium ; the challenges of performing character roles in ballets ; and aspects of Marius Petipa's choreography, including its choreographic structure and combination of classical and Spanish styles.
  2. La bayadère (ca. 28 min.) / interviewees, Celia Franca, Veronica Tennant, Fernando Bujones, Robert Wallace, Cynthia Gregory, Karen Kain, Darcey Bussell, Monica Mason, Peter Ottman (choreologist), William Littler, Bruce Marks, Evelyn Hart ; principal dancers in performance footage, Gabriella Komleva (Nikiya), Rejen Abdyev (Solor). La bayadère is examined as a means of assessing Petipa's position as a choreographer: his inventiveness, the technical demands of his choreography, his integration of the corps de ballet into the dramatic action, and his choreography for the male dancer, placing him on an equal par with the ballerina. Also discussed are dance notation and videotape as methods of documenting choreography.
