- Summary
- Documentary on the origins and evolution of Riverdance -- the show, told mainly in the words of its creators and principal performers, and profusely illustrated with performance and rehearsal excerpts, television news reports and interviews. Producer Moya Doherty describes how she was inspired by the dancing of Jean Butler and Michael Flatley at the Spirit of Mayo performance in August 1993. She, composer Bill Whelan, and director John McColgan recall Riverdance's seven-minute debut as part of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, and the process of expanding this into a two-hour production, which opened at the Point Theatre, Dublin, in February 1995. Further milestones in the show's history include its first London run in Hammersmith in June 1995, followed by an engagement at Labatts Apollo in London; the departure of Michael Flatley and his replacement by Colin Dunne in September 1995; and a second London run in October 1995. The program concludes with scenes from the show's triumphal appearance at Radio City Music Hall, New York, in March 1996.
