Summary

1. Ballet conductor John Lanchbery discusses becoming musical director of American Ballet Theatre, comparing his experience and expectations at American Ballet Theatre to his experiences at the Royal Ballet. He describes his training as a conductor, contrasting the repertoire and working styles of American Ballet Theatre and the Royal Ballet and their orchestras. He reflects on the new challenges he faces as a musical director in New York and on Sol Hurok and Hurok's contributions to touring companies. Lanchbery discusses how the acoustics of performance halls affect musicians, the relationship of music and dance within the theatrical context, and shifts of emphasis, or trends, in music criticism. He discusses his experiences arranging music for ballet, in particular Frederick Ashton's Marguerite and Armand, and Fille mal gardée. Lanchbery concludes with thoughts about his future.
