Biography
  1. Photographer Bert Andrews documented the modern Black Theater Movement in New York City and was the official photographer for the Negro Ensemble Company for over 35 years, beginning in the 1950s. Born in Chicago on March 21, l929, and raised in Harlem, Andrews was originally a songwriter, singer and dancer. He began studying photography while in the U.S. Army in the 1950s and later was an apprentice to Chuck Stewart, one of the foremost jazz photographers.
  2. During his career, Andrews photographed over 1,000 theatrical productions including those of the Negro Ensemble Company, the New Federal Theater, the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop, and the Richard Allen Cultural Center. Among the productions he documented are "Bubbling Brown Sugar," "Ceremonies in Dark Old Men," "Eubie," "For colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf," "A Raisin in the Sun," and "A Soldier's Play." His photographs have appeared in theater anthologies and several national and international publications including Time, Life, and The New York Times. Andrews' work was collected in the book, "In the Shadow of the Great White Way: Images from the Black Theatre" (1989). Andrews died on January 25, l993, in New York City.
  3. In 1985, a fire in Andrews' studio destroyed over 100,000 prints and negatives representing his life's work. For the next three years, Andrews reconstructed part of his collection from prints and negatives in the possession of the artists and theatrical companies he photographed. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is believed to hold the largest collection of Andrews' work in a public repository.
