- Summary
- Four modern dance choreographers who lead their own companies join with Bruce Marks, choreographer and artistic director of the Boston Ballet, and David R. White, executive director and producer of Dance Theater Workshop, in discussing issues facing choreographers in the 1990s. Among the topics discussed are: the paucity of new choreography in the classical idiom ; dance's lack of economic viability, in comparison with popular entertainment ; the devastating effects of AIDS on the dance world ; questions of free speech and censorship ; the need to rethink the role of the artist in society ; the lack of funding as an inhibition on experimentation ; the question of whether there is an imbalance between men and women among leaders of dance companies or recipients of funding ; the globalization of dance, and the need for more dialogue and interaction between artists of different nations.
