Description
  1. 1 videocassette (100 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
  1. Lecture-demonstration by Suki Schorer, former principal dancer with New York City Ballet, longtime faculty member at the School of American Ballet, and author of Suki Schorer on Balanchine Technique (Knopf, 1999). She begins with a discussion of company class as taught by Balanchine: his general philosophy and guiding principles, points of emphasis, qualities he sought to instill in his dancers, interaction with the dancers, sensitivity to the relationship of music and dance. The dancers, in practice clothes, demonstrate selected barre and center exercises. Schorer then addresses aspects of partnering: the use of the hands, the degree of support given to the woman, and the traditional vs. Balanchine approach. Excerpts from Balanchine's ballets, introduced in detail by Schorer, illustrate the points made in her discussion.
