1. These papers fall into four major categories: (1) Documents described in vol. 1 of Ralph E. Twitchell's Spanish archives of New Mexico (Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1914), which includes many documents relating to land grants to the Pueblo Indians; (2) Various indexes and record books kept prior to the establishment of the office of the Surveyor-General including the index to Spanish and Mexican documents kept by Donaciano Vigil and the books in which land titles were recorded in accordance with the provisions of the Kearny Code; (3) Records of the office of the Surveyor-General for New Mexico - grant dockets, records of cases presented for adjudication, letters sent, letters received, etc.; (4) Records of the U.S. Court of Private Land Claims - dockets, records of cases brought before the court, journals vacation minute books, etc.
