Topics covered include his early career with the Kirov Ballet; his defection to the West; his longtime partnership with Margot Fonteyn; his avidity for new challenges as a performer in modern dance, television, and film; his activities as choreographer, director and producer; and his achievements as artistic director of the Paris Opéra Ballet. The program is profusely illustrated by excerpts of Nureyev in his extensive repertory: The sleeping beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Gayane, Marguerite and Armand, Le corsaire pas de deux, Pierrot lunaire, Field figures, Aureole, and his own versions of The nutcracker, Cinderella, and La bayadère. He is also seen performing on The Muppet Show, and in the title role of Ken Russell's film Valentino.
