Summary
  1. Overview of the history of tap dancing in the United States, depicted through still photographs, archival footage, and demonstrations in the television studio. Tap dancers Ralph Brown and Chuck Green, performing as soloists and a team, dance John Durang's hornpipe, a soft-shoe dance, and a sand dance ; and demonstrate basic tap steps, separately and in combination. The b&w archival footage includes Thomas Alva Edison's film of a child dancing (1897) ; the cakewalk as danced in 1903, and on the beach at Coney Island ; dances from Edwin S. Porter's film version of Uncle Tom's cabin ; Louis Douglas dancing in the manner of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson in the film No man's land (1931) ; solos by Tom Patricola and Buster West, costumed as sailors ; a short subject featuring two men's solos ; a solo by Eleanor Powell.
