- Biography
- Benjamin Frederic Carruthers (1911-1985) was a writer, editor, public relations executive and educator. Raised and educated in Chicago, Carruthers completed college degrees at the University of Wisconsin (B.S., 1932) and the University of Illinois (M.A., 1933, Ph.D., 1941), and was a General Education Board Fellow at the University of Havana, Cuba, in 1940. He also assisted poet Langston Hughes on an English translation of "Cuba Libre" by Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen. Carruthers taught at Tillotson College, in Austin, Texas (1933-1937), and Howard University, in Washington, D.C. (1937-1942), specializing in modern and Romance languages.
- From 1942 to 1949, Carruthers was an editor and public relations officer for various organizations, including the Pan American Union, the Office of Inter-American Affairs, the International Broadcast Division of the United States State Department, the Brazilian Government Trade Bureau, and the Republic of Venezuela. In 1949, he was in charge of publicity and education programs for the United Nations, Division of Human Rights, which included UNESCO; performed public relations service for International Services, Inc. and for the Belgian Government during the 1950s; and joined Hilton Hotels International in 1959. Carruthers served as a Vice President for Infoplan International (1962-1968); was travel editor and public relations director at Tuesday Magazine (1968-1973); and joined Essence Magazine, as travel editor, in 1973. He would contribute as a freelance writer to several travel magazines and travel guides throughout the 1970s until his death in 1985.
