Summary

1. Biography of Vaslav Nijinsky, incorporating many quotations from his diaries. The program covers his training and early career in St. Petersburg ; his triumphs in western Europe with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes ; his interpretation of the title role of Michel Fokine's Petrouchka, seen as a metaphor for his relationship to Diaghilev ; his choreographic innovations in L'après-midi d'un faune and Le sacre du printemps ; his marriage to Romola de Pulszky and break with Diaghilev ; his descent into madness and final years. In addition to still photographs of Nijinsky in various roles and in private life, the documentary is illustrated by present-day recreations of his famous roles and choreography, including a reconstruction of L'après-midi d'une faune by the Quatuor Albrecht Knust. Firsthand descriptions of his dancing are provided by his contemporaries Jean Cocteau, Pierre Bertin, and Marie Rambert ; insights into his personal life are provided by his wife Romola and daughters Kyra and Tamara. An excerpt from Irène Jouannet's film Final dramatizes an episode from Nijinsky's later life in which Serge Lifar (played by Philippe Anota) attempted to rouse him from his insanity by dancing before him.
