Description
  1. 1 videocassette (85 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
  1. Twyla Tharp discusses her choreography for The Beethoven seventh, which was given its world premiere by the New York City Ballet on January 22, 2000. She explains how Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 represented a means of defining what romanticism meant to her, and describes the three central men in the cast (Peter Boal, Nikolaj Hübbe, Damian Woetzel) and the individual qualities they brought to the work. With demonstrations by the dancers, she analyzes the ballet's choreography and music, mostly through excerpts from the first movement. Selected movement ideas are shown first in video excerpts recorded with Tom Gold and Stacy Caddell during the ballet's developmental stage, and in their final realization. In a question-and-answer period she talks about her working relationship with New York City Ballet since Brahms/Handel (choreographed with Jerome Robbins in 1984) ; the bases upon which she selects her dancers and music ; her training in music and dance ; the rehearsal process for The Beethoven seventh, particularly her work with Nikolaj Hübbe and Wendy Whelan ; the intent of Isaac Mizrahi's costume designs ; her longstanding and continuing interest in popular culture and music.
