Summary
  1. Disc 1 (ca. 45 min.): Miss Oswald discusses her educational and family background; the beginning of her working life; her early years in the New York Public Library Music Division and her colleagues there including Carlton Sprague Smith. She describes her early efforts to develop dance materials and advance cataloging methods; seeking support and advice from dance critics John Martin and Walter Terry; meeting Lincoln Kirstein; receiving his collections and Kirstein's subsequent support of the Dance Collection.
  2. Disc 2 (ca. 31 min.) Miss Oswald describes her efforts to begin the library's collecting in American ballet and modern dance; working with Ted Shawn to identify photographs in his scrapbook; her impressions of Shawn and Ruth St. Denis; requesting materials from Hanya Holm and Charles Weidman; seeking material on Isadora Duncan; seeking money to process and house the materials as the collection expanded; activities she developed to bring attention to the Dance Collection; her philosophy of collecting.
