Summary

1. Documentary on The last conversation, a choreographic miniature created in 1947 by film director Sergei Eisenstein. The program describes the original production of the ballet, created for the character dancers Konstantin Rikhter and Susanna Zviagina, and the reconstruction of the ballet (begun in 1995) by dance historian Sally Banes. Banes utilized a number of sources, among them action drawings by V. Levin, Eisenstein's musical score and director's notes, and consultations with the Russian historians Elizabeth Souritz and Natalia Sheremetevskaya. The completed five-minute ballet, performed and recorded in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1997, is seen in two versions, the first an unedited long shot, the second an edited version with close-ups.
