Summary
  1. Interview with Elizabeth Streb, artistic director/choreographer of STREB [formerly called Ringside]. She traces the evolution of her choreographic style, which is known for its athleticism, physical daring, and inventive use of space. Looking back over her life, she recalls her childhood taste for speed, physical activity, and machinery ; her study of dance at SUNY Brockport ; her early choreography of the 1970s, which was strongly influenced by the innovations of Merce Cunningham and John Cage. She discusses her choreographic approach, which focuses on body, space, and time ; her belief that "music is the true enemy of dance" ; the "pop action" characteristic of her dance technique ; and examples of choreographic problems she has tackled. She also discusses her viewpoint as a lesbian choreographer ; and the marketing of her work, which has been performed in unconventional venues such as Grand Central Terminal in New York City and the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The interview is intercut with scenes from rehearsals with her company ; among the works she discusses and/or rehearses are Little ease (seen at the beginning and end of the program), Fall line, Plank, and Tied.
