- Summary
- In an interview intercut with scenes of a dance class she teaches in her Westbeth studio, Sally Gross discusses her career and choreography. She recalls teachers who helped form her style, among them Alwin Nikolais, Merle Marsicano, Anna Halprin, Robert Ellis Dunn, and Judith Dunn ; and her early work with Judson Dance Theater. She discusses some of her organizing principles and influences: her practice of Buddhism, with its emphasis on breath; her integration of text and movement; her belief, like Nikolais, that drama grows out of movement; the visual arts; the writings and plays of Samuel Beckett. Among the works she describes in detail are her early piece Conjunctions; her films Stopped in her tracks, Lee's Ferry, and Black and white (each shown in brief clips); Going someplace slow, which was danced with her daughter Sidonia; and Suddenly then she (1998), her first evening-length work. Entrant in the Dance Films Association's 31st annual Dance on Camera Festival 2003.
