"The past ten years has marked an enormous period of change in East/Central Europe, and one result has been the birth of contemporary dance in this region. In May 2000 an international conference was arranged by The Suitcase Fund of Dance Theater Workshop (New York, NY), and the Contemporary Dance Association (Bratislava, Slovak Republic). Artists and arts leaders from fourteen countries were gathered to assess the current accomplishments and challenges in supporting the development of dance in this part of the world. As a choreographer who has worked repeatedly in Eastern Europe during this time, I presented an American artist's perspective on creating work for Slovakian dancers. This paper is a summary of the important ideas exchanged during this conference, and an artist's viewpoint of the particular rewards and challenges of artistic collaboration in East/West relations."--p. 148
