Contrasts the two versions of Nutcracker currently in the repertory of the Kirov Ballet and performed in Baden-Baden, Germany, in Dec. 2001: the 1934 production with choreography by Vassily Vainonen and the 2001 production with sets, costumes, and libretto by sculptor-painter Mikhail Shemyakin and choreography by corps de ballet member Kirill Simonov. Also reviews the Kirov in the Paquita-Divertissement, in George Balanchine's Rubies, and Michel Fokine's The dying swan (danced by Daria Pavlenko), Spectre de la rose, and Polovtsian dances.
