Segment one: Essence, the television program, aired New York City, Channel 4, February 8, 1987, 10:00 p.m. Host Susan Taylor introduces actor and producer Robert Hooks, who reports on the state of black theater in the United States. Particular focus on the Negro Ensemble Company and the Ensemble Theatre of Houston, as well as the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop and Audelco, the Audience Development Committee. Discussion of the value of black theater in exploring issues of black identity, and of the need for increased audience and financial support for black theater from the black community. Brief interviews with Karen Baxter, arts administrator for the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop and Audelco; George Hawkins, artistic director of the Ensemble Theatre; Douglas Turner Ward, co-founder and artistic director of the Negro Ensemble Company; and playwright Richard Wesley. The report focuses on a professional production at the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, starring Esther Rolle. Brief interviews with Robert Nemiroff, Hansberry's ex-husband; scholar Margaret Wilkerson; playwright George C. Wolfe; and the cast members portraying Walter and Ruth in the Chattanooga production. Nemiroff recounts the play's opening night on Broadway. Wolfe discusses a scene from his play The colored museum, titled The last mama on the couch, which satirizes Hansberry's play.
