- Summary
- An episode of the television program Person to person, with Jerome Robbins filmed in his home and interviwed by Edward R. Murrow. Murrow gives a brief introduction in which he summarizes Robbins' career. Initially seen in the living room of his Upper East Side home, Robbins discusses his reputation in the theater world; comments on working with Ethel Merman and Mary Martin; describes his current projects (which include Gypsy and West Side story); discusses how he got started as a choreographer and his time in the borscht circuit; describes how he works with collaborators on musical shows. Robbins shows his dark-room and discusses his hobby, photography; among the photographs he shows is a portrait of Tannaquil LeClercq. Next he shows his office and talks about how he keeps track of his schedule. He lists unsuccessful projects he has been involved with. In his upstairs workroom, Robbins shows sketches by Irene Sharaff and Ben Shahn. He discusses how he switches between different styles of dance and theater; his plans for an upcoming tour with Ballets: U.S.A.; government support for the arts; the quality of the dancers in West Side story; his plans for the future; and the most difficult aspect of directing.
