Summary
  1. [Begins abruptly.] Jerome Robbins' notes for a planned article on the revival of the George Balanchine ballet, Symphonie concertante (1947). Robbins discusses his impressions of the ballet after seeing it performed by American Ballet Theatre in Washington D.C. (ca. Jan. 1983). Robbins compares the ballet to efforts by others to revive the Marius Petipa ballet, La bayadère (1877) and discusses the problems in conveying the choreographer's intention. Robbins discusses his knowledge of Symphonie concertant as it was first performed at New York City Ballet; Balanchine's original interpretation of Mozart's music versus American Ballet Theatre's reinterpretation; the effect of dance notation on dance preservation; Ann Hutchinson Guest's notation of the ballet; the loss of gestures originally intended by Balanchine in the ballet's revival; the Labanotator's goal of precision at the expense of holistic description of the work; Labanotation of dance compared to notating a painting; the Benesh notation version of Bourée fantasque (1949); more on the ballet's revival in comparison with the Balanchine's original and the resulting misinterpretation of Balanchine by critics; the importance of combining dance notation with filming in order to preserve dance; the Labanotator as "dissector" of movement; the importance of reviving Balanchine's work in light of his demise.
