Summary

1. Profile of ballerina Mia Slavenska (1916-2002), told in the words of her daughter, Maria Ramas. Tracing Slavenska's life and career, the documentary discusses her birth in Croatia; her dance debut as a child prodigy in Zagreb; her seasons as a principal ballerina with Serge Denham's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; her marriage to Kurt Neumann; the formation of the Slavenska-Franklin Ballet with her dance partner Frederic Franklin; her retirement from the stage at the age of 47; and her subsequent career as an influential teacher. Also discussed are her extensive re-training in mid-career with Vincenzo Celli, and her personal qualities. Film excerpts depict her in notable roles, among them Carlotta Grisi in Anton Dolin's Pas de quatre; Kitri in the grand pas de deux from Don Quixote (in which she appears alternately with Frederic Franklin and Royes Fernandez); and Blanche in Valerie Bettis's A streetcar named desire (partnered by Franklin as Stanley and Marvin Krauter as Mitch). She is also seen in clips from the motion picture Mort du cygne (released in the U.S. as Ballerina) and a television musical, The great waltz (1955). Following the credits, footage from home movies depict Slavenska with her family members and colleagues in more informal scenes.
