Summary
  1. Disc 1 (ca. 42 min.) Jerome Robbins and composer Morton Gould work together on the music for Robbins' ballet, I'm old fashioned. Gould plays excerpts of variations on the piano. Gould introduces the pieces before playing them and Robbins describes his reactions to them. Robbins and Gould discuss the importance of staying close to the original Kern music and Astaire choreography. Gould discusses the quality of orchestration he has in mind for the score, and the classical quality of Kern's compositions. Robbins plays a video of the dance from You were never lovelier several times and analyzes the choreography, pointing out particular steps he intends to use as the basis for variations in the ballet. Gould discusses the importance of paying tribute to Astaire and his era. Gould and Robbins discuss their future schedules for work on the ballet.
  2. Disc 2 (ca. 20 min.) Jerome Robbins and Morton Gould continue to work on the music for I'm old fashioned. Gould plays the Fugue variation, and Robbins and Gould discuss choreographic and musical ideas for the ending of the ballet. Robbins plays a video of the dance from You were never lovelier again and comments on the process of learning the dance from the film. Gould and Robbins discuss their attitudes toward collaboration. Gould discusses ASCAP president Hal David's opinion of Robbins' recent ballet, Four chamber works (music by Stravinsky, premiere June 16, 1982).

Variations on I'm old fashioned, also known as Astaire variations, is a ballet tribute to Fred Astaire, with music by Morton Gould, based on Jerome Kern's song I'm old fashioned, from the motion picture You were never lovelier (Columbia, 1942). A film clip of a dance performed by Astaire and Rita Hayworth in You were never lovelier is incorporated in the ballet. The ballet premiered on June 16, 1983.
